Application for membership

The Freeport Auxiliary Police are a group of everyday citizens from all walks of life that provide a community service to the citizens of Freeport. All members are non-paid volunteers who take pride in their service to their community.

Under the control and direction of the Chief of Police and Auxiliary Commander, auxiliary officers are called upon to:

  • Provide supplemental manpower to the Police Department for traffic and crowd control during major fires, storms and during other disaster situations.
  • Provide supplemental security functions at fire scenes, crime scenes and at other times deemed necessary.
  • Provide traffic control and safety functions for parades, various Walk-A-Thons and at other events through out the year.

All the functions auxiliary police officers perform allow full-time sworn officers to continue their normal duties of serving and protecting the citizens of Freeport without being tied up performing the above duties.

All members are required to perform a minimum amount of regular patrol squad ride-alongs for training purposes, sixteen community service hours and receive a minimum of sixteen hours of training per year. Training meetings are held each month and cover topics ranging from traffic control, crowd control, traffic and criminal law, officer safety and a variety of other needed skills, abilities and knowledge.

Listed below are some of the requirements of becoming an auxiliary police officer:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age;
  • You must reside within 20 miles of the corporate city limits;
  • Have no criminal convictions (felony or serious misdemeanor);
  • Be of good character and be able to provide personal references;
  • Be willing to be an active member in all areas during the year; and
  • Auxiliary officers also provide most of their own uniform and equipment needs at their own expense

One additional benefit the Auxiliary Unit provides the opportunity to view the job firsthand by someone who may be considering a job in law enforcement.
