Chicago Avenue Reconstruction & Streetscape
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
Lighting fixtures and design elements such as street furniture will be installed in spring of 2023. Currently, Chicago Avenue from Douglas St. to Main St. has been paved and marked. Sidewalks are accessible.
WHY IS THIS PROJECT SO IMPORTANT?
The phased improvements along Chicago Avenue will include upgrades to water, gas, electrical, and telecommunications infrastructure that is over 140 years old and poses a risk to the surrounding infrastructure and businesses. While this 19th century infrastructure is being replaced, the project will also include transportation enhancements, such as the addition of an on-street designated bike lane, resurfacing, and intersection improvements to make crossings safer for pedestrians. Design elements will be included along the avenue that strengthen its identity as a cultural corridor, including new street furniture, dedicated space for future art installations, and infrastructure that will allow street trees to mature without damaging the pavement. Public improvements along Chicago Avenue, between Douglas and Jackson Streets in downtown Freeport, will result in a safer, more vibrant environment for pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicular traffic for generations to come.
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR CONSTRUCTION?
Construction started June 8, 2022. Paving is anticipated to complete in 2022.
WILL BUSINESSES ALONG CHICAGO BE CLOSED?
All businesses along Chicago Avenue will remain open throughout construction.
HOW IS THIS PROJECT FUNDED?
This $5.5 million project has been in the works for 5 years, which has allowed the City to find creative funding sources:
DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES & PARKING
