Chicago Avenue Reconstruction & Streetscape

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
8/15 UPDATE: Fischer Excavating will be closing Chicago Avenue between Stephenson Street and Main Street for construction. This block will be impassable through mid-August.

  • Fischer Excavating will be closing the intersection of Main Street and Chicago Avenue as new sewer and water main are installed. This intersection will be impassable. Water service to properties along this section of Chicago Avenue will experience their water being turned off on Tuesday, August 16 from 6 A.M. to 4 P.M. or as construction allows. Affected business have been notified of the water shut off.

Please mind construction crews and follow traffic flow signage. Fischer Excavating is now located in the Luchy’s building at 11 W Stephenson Street as their construction headquarter for the project duration on Chicago. This office is open and offers business owners and residents a place to stop in person to discuss issues or complaints during the project.

Due to construction interrupting traffic flow around the Freeport Post Office, drive-up post office boxes will be installed in the municipal parking lot across from the Stewart Centre on Douglas Street. Additionally, construction will restrict handicap access into the post office. The Freeport Post Office will be offering curbside assistance while the area is under construction. Please contact the post office for more details or to order curbside assistance.

WHY IS THIS PROJECT SO IMPORTANT?
The phased improvements along Chicago Avenue will include upgrades to water, gas, electrical, and telecommunications infrastructure that is over 140 years old and poses a risk to the surrounding infrastructure and businesses. While this 19th century infrastructure is being replaced, the project will also include transportation enhancements, such as the addition of an on-street designated bike lane, resurfacing, and intersection improvements to make crossings safer for pedestrians. Design elements will be included along the avenue that strengthen its identity as a cultural corridor, including new street furniture, dedicated space for future art installations, and infrastructure that will allow street trees to mature without damaging the pavement. Public improvements along Chicago Avenue, between Douglas and Jackson Streets in downtown Freeport, will result in a safer, more vibrant environment for pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicular traffic for generations to come.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR CONSTRUCTION?
Construction started June 8, 2022. Paving is anticipated to start by Thanksgiving, with construction completing in 2022.

WILL BUSINESSES ALONG CHICAGO BE CLOSED?
