The Finance Department of the City of Freeport is responsible for numerous facets of internal finance:

Freeport Sales Tax Rates: The sales tax rate for general merchandise for the City of Freeport is 9% (effective 7/1/2024). Thee taxes are remitted directly to the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Prepared Food and Beverages (including Alcohol) are subject to the City’s Food and Beverage Tax of 1.25%. Therefore, a combined rate for establishments serving food and beverages is 10.25% (9% general tax and 1.25% Food and Beverage Tax).
Food and Beverage Tax is remitted to the City of Freeport. The necessary forms are located under the Documents tab > Finance Department Forms
Sales Taxes in the City of Freeport are as follows:
- Qualifying Food and Drugs: 1%
- General Merchandise Sales Tax: 9% (2.25% Home Rule, 6.25% State Tax, 0.5% County Public Safety)
- City Hotel-Motel Tax: 5%
- City Food and Beverage Tax: 1.25%
- City Motor Fuel Tax: 0.02¢ per gallon
