04-21-2025 City Council Highlights
FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the April 21, 2025 Freeport City Council meeting include the plans to remove 31 dangerous trees around the City and changes to regulations of wells and septic systems.
Wells and Septic Systems
Council approved changes to City Ordinances regarding Wells and Septic Systems as laid out in Section 1040 of the Codified Ordinances. Highlights from the changes include the addition of the following: No person shall install a well, cistern, geothermal well, or other groundwater collection device to be used to supply any water supply system within the City of Freeport without the City’s prior authorization; Septic tanks, privy vaults, cesspools, and private sewage disposal systems shall not be installed in the city.
Dangerous Trees to be Removed
Staff have identified 31 dangerous trees in the City’s Right-of-Way to be taken down in 2025. Many of these trees pose a significant liability when they come down during storm events. The City has successfully reduced storm damage with this program in recent years. Homer Tree Service won the bid to eliminate the trees this year.
