10-21-2024 City Council Highlights

FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the October 21, 2024 Freeport City Council meeting include the outlining of the streets to be redone in 2025 and a new order for a fire engine for the Freeport Fire Department.

2025 Street Program

The Public Works Department paved 7.5 miles of streets in 2024. Council approved nearly 3 miles of streets to be completed in 2025: S. Hance Dr., W. Cleveland Ave., N. Greenfield Dr., W. Stephenson St., W. Dewey St., S. Carroll Ave., S. Blackhawk Ave., S. Harvey Ave., and N. Willow St.

Five of these streets will be milled and repaved while the other four will see water main replacement and reconstruction. In total, these projects are estimated to be $5 Million in work. A full map was provided to council detailing which streets will be redone.

Fire Engine Purchase Order

Freeport Fire Department’s current Engine One (2010 Rosenbauer) will be due for downgrading to reserve status in four years. Due to a delivery time of 46.5 – 49.5 months, Council approved the purchase order of one Pierce Enforcer Pumper to be funded through the Fire Improvement Fund. This new engine will continue to improve upon the Fire Department’s response time and ensure vehicles remain out of maintenance. In addition, a purchase at this time helps save the City over $90,000 in future raises in price.

Other News

The Honorary Street Name Program allows residents the opportunity to honor those leaders that are steadfast in their endeavors, making significant contributions to the City. Council approved the honorary naming of Armstrong Avenue, between South Street and Adams Avenue, to be “Bishop James Arthur Wade Way”.

Council Chambers will also be holding a second “Public Input Meeting” on Monday, October 28, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for the discussion of the FY25 budget. Residents are invited to attend and provide public comment.
