FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the March 16, 2026 Freeport City Council meeting include the purchases of police radios and safety message boards, as well as $44,000 worth of fuel coming to Albertus Airport.

Police to Purchase Hand-Held Radios

The Freeport Police Department is currently in the fifth year of a five-year plan to replace the portable hand-held Motorola radios currently being utilized by all sworn Police Officers. At Monday’s Council meeting, it was approved to purchase 10 more Motorola hand-held Police radios. Updating and utilizing the latest technology ensures the Freeport Police Department the best opportunity to maintain a safe and inclusive community.

Safety Message Board

The City of Freeport received an Illinois Public Risk Fund (IPRF) Safety Grant from its Workers’ Compensation carrier. This IPRF grant, amounting to over $16,000, will be used to purchase two safety message boards. These pieces of equipment are used to display important information to drivers during construction projects or hazardous events. The Council approved Monday night to match the grant and purchase the equipment.

Other News

The City has received the Aviation Fuel Tax grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation for the past four years. 2026 proved to be no different as the City was awarded over $44,000 to be used for airport expenses.
