05-20-2024 City Council Highlights

FREEPORT, IL – Highlights from the May 20, 2024 Freeport City Council meeting include Façade Improvement Grant awards and approval for Surf Internet to bring its optional service to Freeport.

Freeport Art Museum to Improve Façade at 22-26 E. Exchange Street

Council approved an agreement with the Freeport Art Museum to grant $15,000 towards a façade improvement at 22-26 E. Exchange Street through the Façade Improvement Grant.

The brick building on this property was built in 1924 and was originally housed by M.L. Miller Sales, an automotive sales company. This grant aids a large project in moving the Freeport Art Museum to the same city block as the newly developed Arts Plaza and will help establish a dynamic cultural campus when combined with the Freeport Public Library, Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square, and Union Dairy.

“We love when existing buildings can be repurposed and improved for the sake of adding to the culture of our community,” said Wayne Duckmann, Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Freeport. “With this grant, we are always looking for the best opportunities to beautify our City, and these businesses have shown that they’re ready to do just that.”

The scope of work for façade improvements include new awnings, window replacements, lighted signage, and updated garage doors. Pictures of projected work can be seen in the agreement link above.

In Other Business

Three City-owned locations were approved for six-foot square cabinets to be installed which would allow Surf Internet to provide their services to residents and businesses that choose them as their internet provider. The three locations are the Laurel Street Lift Station at Laurel and Park, Burchard Water Tower on Burchard Avenue, and the City parking lot on Douglas and Walnut.
