03-03-2025 City Council Highlights
FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the March 3, 2025 Freeport City Council meeting include the plans to upgrade street lights identified by the Freeport Police Department as being in high crime areas.
Street Lights
The City has entered an agreement with ComEd to replace 63 light units on the Police Department’s list of high crime activity with increased 149 LED wattage at a cost of $23,562.00 to the City of Freeport ($374 each).
The list of affected streets would include portions of the following: Oak Avenue, Locust Avenue, Broadway Street, Chicago Avenue, State Avenue, Winneshiek Street, Winslow Street, Iroquois Street, Carroll Avenue, Pleasant Street, Float Avenue, Kenwood Avenue, Frank Street, High Avenue, and Galena Avenue.
These costs will include the fixture and total installation. The estimated increase in lighting program costs $5.00 a month in rental maintenance/upkeep and is less than $3.00 additional in electrical cost per light per month to the City contracts. 149-watt LED Lighting units are not in stock and had to be ordered by the supplier. ComEd staff will install it as soon as they arrive. Solar lighting options were researched. While they are potentially an option for City areas without existing utility-powered lights and poles, they are far more expensive to the City over a 1-year, 10-year, or 20-year period in a cost-benefit analysis.
