BOIL ORDER: April 6, 2026

FREEPORT, IL – The City of Freeport has issued a Boil Water Order for all residents until further notice following a major water main break early Monday morning, April 6.

At approximately 6:50 a.m., City monitoring systems detected a significant drop in water pressure. City crews responded immediately and located the break within 20 minutes. The failure occurred on a 12-inch cast iron distribution main installed in 1959, located at a low elevation on Cottonwood.

As a result of the break, a large portion of the City is currently experiencing low or fluctuating water pressure. Crews are actively working to isolate the affected section of the system to stabilize pressure and reduce further impacts to residents and businesses.

Due to the loss of pressure, there is a potential for contamination within the water distribution system. In accordance with Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) requirements, a boil water order has been issued as a precaution at 7:00 AM on Monday, 4-6-2026.

Public Health Advisory

Residents are advised to:

  • Boil all tap water for at least 5 minutes before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or washing food; or
  • Use bottled water until further notice.

Response Efforts

City crews are working to repair the damaged water main, isolate the impacted area, and restore normal system pressure as quickly as possible. Once repairs are completed, water samples will be collected and tested to ensure the system meets all safety standards.

Next Steps

The boil water order will remain in effect until bacteriological testing confirms the water is safe for consumption. The City will notify residents promptly when the order is lifted.

The City of Freeport appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this time.

For updates, residents are encouraged to monitor official City communication channels.
