Shawnee and Hancock Viaduct Closed Until Further Notice

FREEPORT, IL -Starting Tuesday, September 2, the Hancock Viaduct will be closed to all traffic until further notice. This project was delayed due to Nicor securing permits from CN Railway.

The viaduct is a preliminary project to renovating the Hancock Bridge. The improvements would include replacing the water main, storm sewer, and lowering the road by 2.5 feet to allow semi-truck traffic and safety equipment to enter the Arcade area from this viaduct location permanently. As the Hancock Bridge eventually gets worked on, semi-traffic would be detoured to the Viaduct. This is why the Viaduct project comes first.
Road closed signs give crews the proper space and safety to work. Ignoring them could result in injury, project malfunction and more. The City asks that you pay attention to road closed signs and obey them with the utmost caution.
