02-18-2025 City Council Highlights

FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the February 18, 2025 Freeport City Council meeting include the emergency purchase of a snow plow and salt spreader that were both beyond repair.

Emergency Purchase of Plow and Salt Spreader

During the most recent large snowstorm, the Street Department had a 2004 snow plow break during routine usage. This particular unit has failed numerous times with attempted repairs. City mechanics tried to repair the plow between snow events; however, it was too far damaged to be repaired any further. With the snow season in full swing, an emergency procurement of a snow plow from Monroe Truck for $11,598 was approved by Council.

During the same storm, the City’s only utility salt spreading truck was in an accident, putting the 7-year-old equipment beyond repair. Council approved a $10,223 purchase from Monroe Truck to replace the unit.

Street Lights to Soon Be Improved

City staff has been directed to construct a plan to replace all street lights on Police Chief Shenberger’s crime area list with higher-wattage fixtures similar to the 2021 lighting models used in the downtown. These lighting fixtures will not qualify for “Select Communities” help from ComEd as there will be an increase in wattage. Potential project costs for the fixtures are currently estimated at around $45,000. Funding will be determined after meetings with ComEd in the very near future.

Other News

The Public Works Department was also in need of a street painting machine and had budgeted for the purchase in the FY2025 budget. Council approved the purchase in the amount of $11, 706.50.
