05-19-2025 City Council Highlights
FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the May 19, 2025 Freeport City Council meeting include the initial plans for adding up to seven sculptures to downtown Freeport and more.
Sculpture Walk
The Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Freeport Art Museum to create a Sculpture Walk, utilizing the concrete sculpture pads along Chicago Avenue in downtown Freeport.
The MOU outlines the collaboration between the City and the Freeport Art Museum to solicit artists to display sculptures that can bring life and color to Chicago Avenue and will be available for purchase. Interested artists should contact the Freeport Art Museum for more information.
Façade improvement
The annual Façade Improvement Grant was awarded to two projects that look to improve historic downtown buildings. At 20-22 W. Main Street, a new storefront will replace the former occupant’s layout by increasing lighting, canopies and an updated paint job. At 2-6 E. Stephenson Street, the building owner plans to improve the siding and back of the building to ensure the safety of pedestrians and all who occupy the building.
This grant is given out each year and covers up to 50% of project costs for buildings (up to $15,000) in the Downtown TIF District.
