FREEPORT, IL — Highlights from the November 18, 2024 Freeport City Council meeting include the approval of nine property demolitions, the beginning stages of Well #12, and more.

Nine Properties to be Demolished

The demolition and asbestos abatement of nine properties was approved by council through the funding of the IHDA Strong Communities Program Grant. Kleckner Excavating will perform two of the demolitions and Fischer Excavating will complete seven. (Photos in order of appearance: 217 N. Henderson Ave., 441 S. Benton Ave., 1208 S. Well #12 Planning Underway

The City of Freeport is in the design process of Well House #12. The City has received a commitment from IEPA and Eric Sorensen to fund $13.3 million of the originally estimated $14 million of the project. At Monday night’s Council meeting, a building architecture contract and mechanical engineering contract were both approved for the project.

Other News

Freeport is renewing its application to remain a Bird City Illinois, a recognition originally awarded in 2021. Bird City Illinois recognizes communities that implement sound bird-conservation practices, enhancing the environment for birds, and educating the public about the relationship between birds and people and how that contributes to a healthy community.
