Press Release: Storm Debris Pick Up Rescinded

FREEPORT RESCINDS PRACTICE OF COLLECTING STORM DEBRIS

At the October 18, 2021 meeting, Freeport City Council revised their policy of collecting storm debris from residents’ properties. The unwritten policy involved the City collecting curbside tree branches that fell after storms.

While initially created in good faith, many residents included yard waste to curbside tree branches. City Council and Public Works collectively agreed that the unwritten policy had transformed to a misuse of City resources and manpower.

Two sites are available for Freeport residents to take tree debris from storm damage and yard maintenance. Timber Industries, located at 2133 South Walnut Street, is directly across from the fairgrounds and is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM for woody yard waste, branches, brush, and leaves. The Public Works Yard at 1001 North Island Street is open Monday through Friday, 7:00AM to 3:00PM for any small tree branches. Both sites are free to Freeport residents and private contractors.
